Twin Otter Update for 27-Jun-2017

A quiet day on the Twotter front, so a couple of great pictures instead. Marking the end of an era in Newfoundland and Labrador, Innu Mikun and Air Labrador became Air Borealis earlier this month. C-GNFZ is seen below with thanks to Duane Blake.

C-GNFZ is MSN 719, and has flown in South America and Africa before coming to Canada in 2011. Since that time it actually flew with both Innu Mikun and Air Labrador.

A great air-to-air shot of the NASA DHC-6 N607NA over northern Ohio. The aircraft is based at the Glenn Research Center at Cleveland, OH. It is MSN 4, having been built in 1966 for the Ontario Department of Lands & Forests. Photo with thanks to NASA.

Calgary's Planes & Parts Ltd. (World Wide Ferry) move more Twin Otters around the globe than any other ferry company, and they have now added surface transport to their capabilities. With a new company owned 5th wheel tractor and purpose built air-ride triple axle trailer, they can now move aircraft that are unable to be flown. Currently the company is licensed to transport within Canada, and service is expected to be available to/from the U.S.A. soon.

Twin Otter Update for 26-Jun-2017

Twin Otter Spotter Five+ Years In

TwinOtterSpotter has been the "go to" resource for DHC-6 news for the past five and a half years. Pretty safe to say that everyone associated with, or interested in the Twin Otter comes here regularly, no matter where they are located. The contributions of the advertisers in particular have made Twin Otter Spotter viable.

June/July 2017 will be fundraising months, with an effort to cover the various costs associated with the site. Corporately, contributions can be new advertising, or donation. Privately, donations via Paypal are greatly appreciated. This is a one-guy, run from the basement show, and it requires a considerable amount of time and effort to keep things going. Please help to support TwinOtterSpotter into the next year.

Twin Otter Update for 31-May-2017

963 - DHC-6-400 C-FVGY Viking Air Ltd., Sidney, BC

Registered 29-May-2017.

Viking Adjusts Workforce Requirements at Victoria and Calgary

Viking Air Ltd. is laying off 212 workers and halting production of its Twin Otter aircraft in North Saanich and Calgary for three months beginning at the end of July.
“This is temporary. It is not a permanent layoff. We are just taking time off on our production side,” company president Dave Curtis said in an interview on Tuesday. The 90-day pause in production starts July 28, and will give the company time to line up more sales, Curtis said. “We think that there are deals that we are going to close.”
Curtis expects the potential sales will likely take 60 to 90 days to complete. Viking has 420 employees. Of those, 320 are in North Saanich and 100 are in Calgary. Layoffs will affect 136 unionized production workers in North Saanich and 76 in Calgary.
Staff were informed of the layoffs on Tuesday, allowing 60 days notice.Viking said some of the factors slowing the market are the decline in growth in the Chinese economy and difficulties selling into the Russian market. Twin Otters are widely used in mining and energy and the downturn in those sectors has hit Viking Air sales.
Even so, Curtis is optimistic the company will sell another 200 airplanes. Last year, the company built 18 Twin Otters.
Viking is diversifying, Curtis said. It bought the manufacturing rights for Bombardier’s waterbombers last year.
“We have a huge amount of opportunities around the water bomber and we are going to be working pretty hard to bring work back to Canada that is currently not here. That is going to help stabilize our workforce and diversify the production side of things. We are doing all these things at the same time.”As well, a new sister company, Longview Aviation Asset Management, will provide Twin Otter customers with leases and financing options. Curtis likened the service to what can be found at vehicle dealerships. It has six new Viking Twin Otters in Calgary.
Viking slowed production of its planes in spring 2015 and laid off 116 employees (100 from North Saanich) when sales slowed and some customers were not paying for planes they had ordered.
At that time, the company reduced the speed of production to turn out a new plane every 15 days, rather than in 10 days.

Twin Otter Update for 20-Apr-2017

IKHANA Aircraft Services announces Trans Maldivian Airways to Re-Life™ one of their DHC-6-300 Twin Otters and receives PMA on the Fuselage

IKHANA Aircraft Services (IKHANA) is pleased to announce that Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) has chosen to Re-Life™ a DHC-6-300 Twin Otter as approved in accordance with IKHANA’s RWMI DHC-6 Re-Life Fuselage™ Supplemental Type Certificate (STC). “TMA operates the largest twin-otter fleet in the world, flying more than 120,000 flights annually, transferring close to a million passengers to their island destinations. Recently, TMA added two more aircraft to its fleet thereby further strengthening its position as the world’s largest seaplane operator” said Stanley Ranjitkumar, TMA’s Chief Commercial Officer and Deputy Company Secretary. “TMA sees the many benefits of this Re-Life™ program as it adds tremendous value to the already legendary Twin Otter”.

In addition, IKHANA is also pleased to announce that the RWMI DHC-6 Re-Life Fuselage™ has just been issued FAA-PMA. As an FAA-PMA product, IKHANA’s RWMI DHC-6 Re-Life Fuselage™ may now be provided with an FAA Form 8130-3 (equivalent to EASA/TCCA Form One) for component manufacture. “Our goal has always been to add value to whatever we do,” states John Zublin President/CEO of IKHANA. ”Receiving PMA on the structural fuselage is another very important tool in our effort to bring value and flexibility to Twin Otter operators worldwide.” Combined with IKHANA’s RWMI DHC-6 Re-Life Wing Boxes™, RWMI DHC-6 ReLife Flight Controls™, and RWMI DHC-6 Re-Life Nacelles™ all of the Twin Otter life limited structural components are now eligible for Re-Life™ re-manufacture providing regulatory approved “NEW” components.

The original DHC-6-100, -200, and -300 Series Twin Otters, produced from 1965 to 1988, have a fuselage fatigue life limit of 66,000 hours/132,000 cycles. The RWMI DHC-6 Re-Life Fuselage STC™, allowing NEW 66,000 hours/132,000 cycles of fatigue life, was awarded by the FAA in November of 2011 and is applicable to all of the DHC-6 Legacy Series Twin Otter airplanes. IKHANA has been a key provider of enhancements for the worldwide DHC-6 Twin Otter fleet with products including the RWMI DHC-6 Re-Life Wing Box™, RWMI DHC-6 ReLife Fuselage™, RWMI DHC-6 Re-Life Flight Controls™, and RWMI DHC-6 Re-Life Nacelles™.
