Airfast's second Series 400, MSN 868 C-FAFI is currently awaiting delivery in Victoria, BC.




The photo yesterday of the former TMK Commuter DHC-6-300 MSN 735 9Q-CBO taken in Calgary resulted in the contribution of a couple of photos of the accident itself. Although the aircraft sustained major damage, there were no fatalities in the crash.

As accident photos are something that not everyone wants to see, I've added a separate page which can be found by clicking on the link in the Image Archive & Other Pages tab on the right of the screen.

Thank-you to Nigel Hitchman for permitting us to add a few shots from Calgary earlier this fall.

C-GPOQ returned to Calgary in August 2012 from contract in Quebec, and is pictured here during September. By the 28th of September it had left Calgary again routing to Casper, WY and Joplin, MO and ? (is this one in Guyana?)

C-FDHB was repaired following it's hard landing incident at Kimmirut, NU back in Dec-2011, and by 01-Nov-2012 it had left Calgary, AB bound for Colorado Springs, CO, Brownsville, TX and Liberia, Costa Rica heading to Antarctica.

C-GKBV is pictured here in basic Seaborne Airlines colours at Calgary, AB. The following day it departed on delivery to Seaborne's base in Saint Croix, USVI where it replaced MSN 617 C-GKBR which has returned to Canada.

The value of the remaining existing legacy Twin Otters is clearly demonstrated by the lengths to which operators go to recover salvageable airframes. Former TMK Commuter 9Q-CBO crashed after take-off from Goma, Congo in 2005.

It's nice to see the Spokane paint shop putting out another colourful airframe, even though it is cetainly reminiscent of Kenn Borek. 

 

 

 

MSN 869 carries a U.S. registration under the sticker, and that is traceable to whom it was reserved by on 20-Sep-2012. Although that is a public record, respecting the wishes of the Manufacturer and Customer I will not publish that information at this point in time.

Caught sitting outside the Hevilift facility in Cairns on 24-Nov-2012 this is presumed to be DHC-6-300 MSN 573, the former N573SA. If so, this aircraft arrived in Australia in 2010 and has since been resident in the hangar undergoing a lengthy rebuild.

The arrival of C-FGAL at Jakarta's Halim Perdanakusuma Airport completes the delivery flight of the 21st Viking Series 400 produced. It is the first Series 400 for Airfast Indonesia from their order of four, with the second unit (MSN 868 C-FAFI) currently in Victoria, BC. The final two aircraft in the order are scheduled for delivery in 2014.

 

C-FGAL began it's delivery flight in Victoria, BC on 24-Oct-2012.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Incident Report

629 - DHC-6-300 9M-MDO MASWings, Subang, Malaysia

07-Nov-2012

Veered off runway on landing at Marudi, Malaysia collided with a perimeter fence and came to rest in a ditch approximately 20 metres left of the runway. One passenger received injuries, however the remaining 18 occupants (including pilots) escaped safely.

The Viking Series 400 gallery has also been brought up to date with the addition of another dozen or so images that had been featured in blog entries, but had not been added to the gallery itself.

 

As you'll note below, the latest aircraft C-FVAM (MSN 869) has been pretty active in Calgary first noted in the air on 28-Oct-2012 then pretty well daily through to 04-Nov-2012. The Customer for MSN 869 will remain undisclosed.

Ikhana Launch Twin Otter X2 Program

IKHANA announces the launching of their IKHANA Twin Otter X2 program as a package of proprietary modifications and enhancements coupled with full maintenance and current inspections. IKHANA’s Twin Otter X2 Re-Life program uses IKHANA’s RWMI DHC-6 Re-Life Wing Box and Re-Life Fuselage Supplemental Type Certificates (STC) as the FAA approved engineering design basis. The IKHANA Twin Otter X2 package authorizes the “Re-Life” of time-expired DHC-6 airplanes to new “Zero Time” structural life limits of 66,000 flight hours or 132,000 flight cycles, whichever occurs first.

 

“The key to the IKHANA Twin Otter X2 is the combination of our STC’d RWMI DHC-6 Re-Life Fuselage with our RWMI Re-Life Wing Box to create value from an operator’s unusable timed-out asset.” states Mr. John Zublin, President/CEO of IKHANA. “We are essentially providing the Twin Otter with a new “birth certificate” and a new, full useful life.” added Mr. Zublin “IKHANA Is currently working on three deliveries for 2013.”

 

The “X2” designation is the packaging of the RWMI DHC-6 Re-Life Fuselage with the RWMI DHC-6 Re-Life Wing Boxes. New systems are installed along with a customer’s choice of avionics, Overhaul Condition (OHC) or factory new engines, and OHC or new propellers. Aircraft are delivered with a complete airplane exterior paint stripping, epoxy prime, seam seal, and epoxy paint (Dupont Imron) and interior, based on customer specifications.
