Photo Update From Arizona

With thanks to Frank Jäger in France, a nice series of photos from Arizona taken earlier this month. First up a couple from Skydive Arizona's dropzone in Eloy, and the remaining from the Grand Canyon Airport.

The Grand Canyon Airlines and Scenic Airlines aircraft seen below feature a variety of paint schemes. The latter company is part of Grand Canyon, however it operates under a separate certificate, and aircraft move between the two units as required. The red, black and white scheme is the most recent, however these aircraft have yet to have titles applied.

Reignwood Aviation Group of Beijing to Become Exclusive Representative for Viking Series 400 Twin Otter in China

At a signing ceremony held earlier today at the Paris International Air Show, Viking president & CEO David C. Viking Air Set to Launch Twin Otter Sales in the People's Republic of China

After spending the last 18-24 months trying to get the Twin Otter certified by Chinese aviation authorities, Viking Air is now able to actually sell and deliver the product to China. Officially announced yesterday by dignitaries from Canada and the People's Republic of China, the Bilateral Aviation Technical Arrangement paves the way for Viking to become the first Canadian company to benefit from the new agreement.

While the company awaited approval it took the opportunity to work the trade shows and establish contacts, and is signing with a locally based partner to market the product. Viking is hoping to spend the next 30-60 days firming up agreements with potential customers, and will then be able to begin delivering the aircraft to the country. The company sees a potential of up to 25 aircraft annually in the Chinese market, valued at $3.5 billion in export potential over the next 20 years.

MSN 434 - DHC-6-400 C-FDHT

Those familiar with the Twin Otter are likely aware that although this new agreement allows for the import of the Viking Series 400 product, the legacy series Twin Otters were previously operated in the People's Republic of China. Beginning in 1978, a total of 12 -300 Series were delivered to state owned operators, all of which had been exported again by the late 1990's. During the period that the legacy models were in the country, the Chinese developed their own light transport/utility aircraft, the Harbin Y-12 that had seating for 17, and was powered by two PWC PT6A-27 engines.

First Twin Otter Crews Recruited for People's Republic of China

In related news within the same region, CCAG-Air has begun advertising for Twin Otter Series 300 & 400 flight crews with float experience. The two year contract positions for Captains and First Officers are slated to begin in Sep/Oct-2015, and are based in China's Shandong province.

Twin Otter 50th Anniversary Celebration Tour to Visit More Than a Dozen Northern Canadian Communities

Victoria, British Columbia, June 8th, 2015: In 1965, the first official Canadian flag flew over the Houses of Parliament, and the Twin Otter aircraft took its maiden flight. For the past 50 years, the Twin Otter has been an essential part of Canada's north due to its unique ability to perform reliably providing infrastructure support in the toughest and most challenging environments.

To honour the shared anniversary of the Canadian flag and the Twin Otter aircraft, and to recognize the aircraft’s Canadian heritage, Viking will be conducting a special 50th Anniversary Celebration Tour travelling to communities in Nunavut, Northwest Territories, and Yukon.

The tour will commence July 1st as part of the City of Victoria’s Canada Day festivities, where a fleet of Viking aircraft will fly over the "Living Flag" display on the lawn of the Victoria Legislature. The aircraft will then depart on July 2nd for a two-and-a-half week flying tour to the North.

Viking pilots and dignitaries, along with a documentary film crew, will leave Victoria BC, and head to Yellowknife in two planes, including a Series 400 Twin Otter demonstrator affectionately known as "Viki." The team will stop at 13 different northern communities and locations, including Canadian Forces Bases in Eureka and Alert.

"Whether on wheels, floats, skis or tundra tires, the Twin Otter has been a lifeline of transportation, community connection and commerce for isolated regions, not only in Canada’s north but around the world," commented David Curtis, Viking president & CEO, who is taking part in the journey. "This tour is an opportunity to connect with some of our customers and view their operations first hand, so I’m excited to personally visit so many of these northern communities in one extensive trip."

Sherry Brydson, chairman of the board of Westerkirk Capital, and her partner Rob McDonald, will also take part in the 17-day northern tour. "The 50th Anniversary Celebration Tour is a way for us to pay tribute to the Canadian north and thank the valued pilots, passengers, owners, operators, mechanics and engineers who have contributed to the Twin Otter’s success,” Brydson said. “We hope to hear and document some of the unique and historic stories of residents who have been served by the Twin Otter since its first flight in 1965, and we’re really looking forward to meeting people across the north with Twin Otter tales to share."

At 11 of the scheduled tour locations, a small celebration ceremony will be held at the local airport to recognize both the plane and the Canadian flag. In each of these communities, residents will be invited to view the Twin Otter Series 400 aircraft, share Twin Otter stories, and sign a wing rib for the 100th Viking production aircraft, scheduled to be built in 2016.

The celebration ceremony dates, locations and times are:

July 3 Cambridge Bay, 1:00 pm

July 4 Resolute, 3:00 pm

July 5 Pond Inlet , 1:30 pm

July 7 Gjoa Haven, 12:00 noon

July 8 Yellowknife, 1:30 pm

July 15 Tuktoyaktuk, 10:30 am

July 15 Sachs Harbour, 3:30 pm

July 16 Fort Good Hope, 1:00 pm

Said David Curtis, "We welcome all Twin Otter enthusiasts to join us at one of the scheduled celebrations and become part of the ongoing legacy of this remarkable aircraft.”

Aircraft number four for Chukotavia is currently en route to Russia on delivery. Unfortunately I didn't catch this one yesterday, as it was filed as a DHC2 rather than a Twin Otter. In any case the aircraft departed from Anchorage today, and after a stop in Nome is continuing towards Anadyr. At the time of writing it is crossing the first part of the Bering Sea, between Nome and Provideniya.

With thanks to Kevin Fortney, and Don Jordan up in Anchorage, a couple shots of C-FGAL as it passed through there;

Photos - Osprey Wings, Transwest Air and Bradley Air Services

Received a nice series of photographs from Dale Tiedeman, and the first three are presented below. C-GPVQ has a colourful past, and looks pretty spectacular for an aircraft that has seen fourteen previous operators, including ten in Canada alone. The aircraft was originally delivered in 1968.

C-FPGE is seen below, photographed last summer in La Ronge. This aircraft has recently received the new Transwest Air corporate colour scheme, which was rolled out in Mar-2015.

I have completed the scanning of another 1,200 slides from the collection of Ken Swartz, and below are a couple of  Twin Otters from Bradley Air Services, taken at their old Carp, ON base in 2002 and 1989 respectively.

MSN 373 C-FASG went to Kenn Borek in 2012, and is currently flying from Saint Maarten as PJ-WIO. Below that is MSN 507 C-GPJB which went through several owners after Bradley, eventually ending up in New Caledonia, where it today flies with Air Loyauté as F-OIAY.

Page Updates

As there is little in the way of news to report, I have had an opportunity to complete a couple of page updates below.

On another note entirely, some news sources are reporting an accident involving a Twin Otter at Pokhara, Nepal. This is incorrect, although there was an accident the aircraft involved was Goma Air's LET 410 9N-AKY. Goma Air began operations in Oct-2014.

The following pages have been updated or replaced with effect from today:

  • DHC-6 Operators U.S.A. (updated)

  • Viking Series 400 Production List (replaced)
